On average Arizona reports about 4 tornadoes a year. This year along in Phoenix there have been two tornadoes, most recently in July 2010 in Tonopah. When low based, sheared, severe thunderstorms tear across the southwest there is a possibility of tornadoes. More likely in southern california due to microclimates. AZ gets more high based thunderstorms then lowbased which drops the possibility of tornados right there. It is rare but possible.
