A/C Refrigerant Transition is Continuing
Air conditioning systems are continuing to transition to more environmentally friendly refrigerants, phasing out R-22 commonly known as Freon. Since January 1, 2010 any newly installed A/C systems had to use refrigerants such as R-410A, likely known by the brand name, Puron. Another benchmark change is coming up in the near future. Good-bye to R-22 (Freon) and R-410A (Puron) is here to stay.
The next benchmark date is January 1, 2020 after which R22 will NOT be manufactured or imported, The only supply of R22 will be from recycled, reclaimed or stock piled quantities. One can only guess what will happen to the the price! For a more detailed explanation, watch the video below.
If you’re not sure which kind of refrigerant your air condition uses, you can 
check the label. It should indicate which type it uses. Remember, if it was installed after January 1, 2010, it most likely uses the newer more efficient and environmentally friendly R410A. Pre- 2010, chances are it uses Freon /R-22. If you have an older R-22 unit, it would be best to consult a trusted A/C professional the next time it needs a repair because the cost will continue to increase.
